ETC - Kottarakara

AN INTRODUCTION

 
The ETC Kottarakara was established on 6th April 1953 under the Development Department as Gram Sevak Training Centre at Mavelikkara   in Alappuzha district.  The Centre started functioning in its own campus as Extension Training Centre at Kottarakara, spread over an area of 70.87 acres along the Kottarakara – Oyoor road in Kollam District.  The focus of the centre is providing training to Officials and Non-officials of six Southern districts viz. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Idukki.   Need based training programmes are designed and conducted by this centre throughout the year for various clientele groups.
 

ACTIVITIES

 
Training is the main focus of ETC, besides agricultural activities through the Farm attached to this centre.  During the current year courses are framed to enable Rural Development Department Official and PRI functionaries to function effectively and cope with the changing trends of Rural Development.  Courses are also framed to provide Orientation for representatives of SHGs, Mahilasamajams, NGOs, Youth clubs, Rural Organi zations and Farmers, Importance is given for curriculum development, upgrading the skills and modifying the skills and attitude of the participants.  The courses offered by this centre can be classified into three categories as follows.

FACULTY

 
The ETC has Faculty in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Rural Industries, Co-Operation, Home Science, Rural Economics, Rural Development and Rural Engineering.  ETC is also   utilizing service of external faculty as and when required.  Officers and Technical experts serving in the Government Departments/Organizations and Independent Consultants are engaged as Resource persons.
 

INFRASTRUCTURE

 
  • The following wings are attached to this centre.
 
  • Training Blocks with 2 classrooms and one conference hall.
 
  • Home Science wing that comprises of two classrooms and one laboratory
 
  • A workshop with class rooms for village Artisans
 
  • Hostel Building (4 Nos.) with an accommodation facility of 100 men and 50 women.
 
  • Auto mobile work shop
 
  • Agricultural Farm.
 

COMPUTER LAB

 
ETC has a newly set up computer lab where there is facility to impart training in Computer Application.  Effective training is being imparted to officers of Rural Development Department and staff of other Departments in Computer Application.
 

WORKSHOP

 
A well equipped workshop is attached to this centre where there is facility to provide training in carpentry, black smithy, welding, aluminium fabrication, wiring spray painting etc.  One Chief Instructor and two Training Officers are attached to this wing.
 

AGRICULTURAL FARM

 
The agricultural farm with an area of 57.50 acres attached to this center is a source of income for Government.  A Farm Manager heads the Farm and it has been developed into a demonstration plot for sustainable agricultural practices.  Seeds and planting materials produced in the farm have great demand among farmers of the locality.
